The Basics

What Is Deck Refinishing?

Deck refinishing brings worn wood back to life. Over time, sun, rain and snow wear away the old finish, and the boards start to gray, dry out and soak up water. Refinishing clears away what's left of the tired finish, gets the wood clean and ready, and adds a new coat of stain or sealer.

The result is a deck that looks cared for again, with a fresh layer of protection against the weather.

Signs to Look For

How Do You Know Your Deck Needs Refinishing?

A quick test helps: sprinkle a little water on the boards. If it beads up, the finish is still doing its job. If it soaks in fast and darkens the wood, the finish has worn through. Other signs to watch for:

  • Gray, faded or blotchy boards
  • Stain that's peeling or flaking
  • Rough, splintering wood underfoot
  • Spots that stay dark long after it rains
  • Railings and steps that look more worn than the rest
Choosing a Finish

Should You Stain or Seal Your Deck?

Deck finishes range from clear to fully opaque. Each one trades off how much wood grain shows against how much color and coverage you get.

Clear Sealer

Keeps the natural look of the wood and repels water, with little or no added color.

Transparent Stain

Adds a hint of color while letting most of the grain show through.

Semi-Transparent Stain

Richer color with some grain still visible, a popular middle ground.

Solid Stain

Opaque color that covers the grain, a lot like paint, and can even out older, weathered boards.

The best choice depends on the age and condition of your deck and the look you're after, and it's something we can talk through together.

Timing

Why Refinish Your Deck Before Summer?

Michigan's outdoor season is short, and most people want the deck ready for the first warm weekend, not halfway through July. Refinishing also needs dry weather and time for the finish to cure before the patio furniture goes back out.

Planning ahead gives you the best shot at having the deck ready when you want to use it. When you reach out, let us know roughly how big the deck is and when you'd like it done.
